Cosmetic Surgery Blog: Microdermabrasion Helps All Skin Types

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive treatment which helps smoothen out your skin and helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Microdermabrasion also helps reduce the appearance of acne, age spots, and pigmentation.

When you undergo Microdermabrasion, your skin is treated through a series of medical grade crystals which are massaged over your skin with a handheld device. The device basically is swept over the skin in a smooth movement. As the crystals move over the skin, the upper layer of your skin is removed to reveal fresh new skin which is below.

The new skin cells are soft and smooth when compared to the dying skin cells that were present before the Microdermabrasion treatment. Essentially Microdermabrasion is really a more intensive kind of exfoliation. Microdermabrasion helps reduce wrinkles and fine lines by stimulating the epidermis. This results in the promotion of new collagen, which helps thicken the dermis and aids anti-aging.

Microdermabrasion can be done on all skin types and on patients of all ages. Microdermabrasion requires no real recovery time and the results are immediate. It's a perfect beauty regiment before a major event or function. People suffering from acne and skin spots can see an immediate improvement of their skin from undergoing regular Microdermabrasion treatments.

Plastic Surgeon Blog: Thinking of Plastic Surgery? You’re Not Alone!

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) published that in 2009, 12.5 million cosmetic plastic surgery procedures were performed in the United States. That number, although quite impressive, was actually one percent lower than the number of surgeries performed in 2008. Economic reasons were cited as the reason for lower numbers in 2009 however the outlook is positive for the future according to the ASPS president Michael McGuire.

Minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures were extremely popular in 2009 and they showed an increase when compared to 2008. The ASPS reports that the top five minimally-invasive procedures in 2009 were:

    * 48 million Botulinum toxin type A
    * 1.7 million Soft tissue fillers
    * 1.1 million Chemical peels
    * 910,000 Microdermabrasion treatments
    * 893,000 Laser hair removal procedures

In contrast cosmetic surgical procedures showed a decline by about nine percent. The top five surgical procedures in 2009 were:

    * 289,000 Breast augmentations
    * 256,000 Nose reshapings
    * 203,000 Eyelid surgeries
    * 198,000 Liposuctions
    * 115,000 Tummy tucks

I guess this makes sense. As more and more innovative, non-invasive procedures become available, less and less people will be inclined to go under the knife.

The exception to the above would be plastic surgery that would be done for reconstruction purposes, whereby an abnormal structure is improved in appearance or function. ASPS reported that reconstructive plastic surgery went up by 5% in 2009 and the top five reconstructive procedures in 2009 were:

    * 3.9 million Tumor removals
    * 332,000 Laceration repairs
    * 171,000 Scar revision
    * 110,000 Hand surgeries
    * 90,000 Maxillofacial surgeries

So if you are considering plastic surgery, you aren't alone by any means. This data shows that more and more people embrace plastic surgery as a more readily available choice to improve or enhance looks and body contours. Cosmetic Surgery Blog: Tummy Tucks Basics
July 6th, 2010

A tummy tuck is also known as abdominoplasty. A tummy tuck removes excessive fat and skin and tighten weakened muscles to create a smoother abdomen.

A tummy tuck may be done under sedation or under general anesthesia, depending on what your doctor recommends. One or two incisions may be made and the excess fat and excess skin may be removed. Then sutures or skin adhesives may be used to close the incisions.

Within one or two weeks, you'll find yourself with a flat, firm shoes.

A tummy tuck makes you look great. However there are a lot of risks of getting abdnominoplasty, some of which are:

  • Excessive scarring
  • Remaining Loose skin
  • Bleeding and infection
  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Nerve damage

It is important to know and understand these risks by speaking with a board certified experienced cosmetic surgeon. Contact our office today to schedule a no-obligation consultation.

The Beauty Blog: How satisfied are you with your plastic surgery procedure?
May 19th, 2010

The May/June issue of Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery includes a report and results of a study conducted between 2007 and 2008 to measure patient satisfaction for patients who underwent plastic surgery. Dr. Jill L. Hessler of Premier Plastic Surgery in Palo Alto, Calif., and her colleagues surveyed 51 patients who had plastic surgery between 2007 and 2008.

They found that patients who were older than 53 years of age reported that they were more satisfied with their treatment than their younger counterparts. The study authors also noted in their report that patients who were being treated for depression were also more likely to be satisfied with their experience than those who weren't. And the authors found that being pessimistic or optimistic had no impact on whether a patient felt more or less satisfied. Meaning, that dimension had no relevance to the results found.

Here's are my thoughts on the study:

So perhaps older people are more satisfied because they know realistically what they should expect. Younger people on the other hand may be looking for instant overnight miracles which may result in them feeling that they didn't quite get what they wanted.

Not sure what to think of the depression treated patients and their higher rate of satisfaction. Perhaps the drugs they were on created a more peaceful demeanor?

And I found it interesting that the optimism or pessimism nature of a patient didn't weigh heavily in the results because logically speaking optimistic people have less to complain or be dissatisfied about than pessimistic people, right?

But in conclusion, I wonder about the purpose of the study in the first place given the small sample size and the overall conclusions from that study. Hmmm….
