Old age causes wrinkles but wrinkles are also caused by damage caused by the sun and pollution. Human collagen can be injected into your face just under the area where the wrinkles are to help reduce the appearance of these fine lines.

CosmoDerm™ collagen injections may be a good option for you if you have crow's feet around the eyes or are seeing small vertical lines above the upper lip.

CosmoPlast™ is another collagen treatment option if you have deep wrinkles between brows or smile lines around mouth.  It can also help fix severe acne scars.

CosmoDerm™ and CosmoPlast™ are basically human collagen injections that are injected beneath the skin in areas where the filler is needed. There is little or no discomfort because the injection contains lidocaine that will numb the skin. CosmoDerm™ and CosmoPlast™ don't crate any redness or swelling and so patients can immediately return to their day to day activities. CosmoDerm™ and CosmoPlast™ effects last up to six months.

The benefits of using CosmoDerm™ and CosmoPlast™ are that they are both created from purified human collagen. This means that patients don't have to wait for a skin allergy test. Patients can also combine CosmoDerm™ and CosmoPlast™ with other facial procedures such as Botox.

There are no real side effects of using CosmoDerm™ and CosmoPlast™ but it is important that patients consult with a board certified cosmetic surgeon who can discuss all the benefits and risks of using CosmoDerm™ and CosmoPlast™.

CosmoDerm™ and CosmoPlast™  are great alternatives to plastic surgery. So if you aren't ready for a face lift or an eyebrow lift, you may wish to check out CosmoDerm™ and CosmoPlast™.

Contact us today to make an appointment and to determine if CosmoDerm™ and CosmoPlast™ are for you.

Plastic Surgery Blog: Gynecomastia or Male Breast Reduction Surgery (Part 2)

We discussed Gynecomastia in our previous post. Here are some more details about Gynecomastia and it's causes.

A Greek study done some years ago included 954 young men between the ages of 18 to 26. The co-authors of the study that was published in the the Annals of Human Biology found enlarged breasts in approximately 40 percent of the study participants. The co-authors also suggested that obesity or early maturation may be leading reasons for enlarged breasts to develop. The individuals who develop enlarged  are not necessarily overweight or obese.

But enlarged breasts in men can also be due to hormonal reasons. Men with enlarged breasts may have excessive amounts of estrogen. Other causes for enlarged breasts may be usage of anabolic steroids, liver disease, kidney disease, and a deficiency in testosterone.

One misconception in young men with enlarged breasts is that going to the gym can result in reduction of the enlarged breasts. However, that's not the case in most cases. That's because the development of pectoral muscles can actually make the breasts look more pronounced.

Gynecomastia is not usually covered by health insurance and can cause thousands of dollars. Nowadays minimally invasive surgical techniques can be used to correct enlarged breasts. These minimally invasive techniques result in reduced scarring due to the small incisions made under the armpits or on the sides of the breasts. Post-surgery recovery is also speedier with minimally invasive surgery procedures.

Although enlarged breasts may be due to the reasons mentioned above, breast cancer and ulcers may also be the reason for enlarged breasts. Yes, breast cancer can develop in men too. So it is extremely important that men who have enlarged breasts get themselves checked out by a specialist to rule out any medical problems.

Hope this has helped you understand Gynecomastia. If you are considering a Gynecomastia procedure, please contact our office for an appointment today!

Think we only offer plastic surgery procedures and solutions for women? Think again! We are an equal opportunity plastic surgeon :) and one of our most popular plastic surgery procedures is Gynecomastia or breast reduction surgery for men.

Gynecomastia corrects enlarged or over-developed breasts in men. Gynecomastia surgery may be performed on men of any age who may be suffering breast enlargement due to disease, heredity, or hormonal changes. Enlarged breasts in men can also be developed due to the usage of certain drugs which may require a gynecomastia procedure.

If you have enlarged breasts, you may see excessive fat in the breast area, excessive development of your glandular tissue, or it may be in one breast and not in the other.

Gynecomastia may be a consideration if you feel embarrassment or havee close proximity issues or if Gynecomastia is affecting your life and your relationships adversely.

More about the what and how of Gynecomastia  in our subsequent post…..happy reading. Contact our office today should you be interested in a consultation about Gynecomastia or any other plastic surgery procedures.

Plastic Surgeon Blog: Cell Enriched Cosmetic Surgery
July 23rd, 2010

Tags: ,

Cell Enriched Cosmetic Surgery as the name suggests is procedure in which fat cells containing stem cells are transferred to other areas of the body. This is an experimental procedure recently performed on a patient in Plano, Texas to help reverse aging and muscle tissue deterioration.

The entire process of Cell Enriched Cosmetic Surgery involves removing fat cells from various parts of the body. These fat cells are then treated to multiply the amount of stem cells present. These fat cells containing stem cells are then transferred to the parts of the body where more volume is required.

Cell Enriched Cosmetic Surgery is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration yet but is expected to get approved in a few months.

Since stem cells promote better tissue regeneration, the doctor who performed the experimental surgery states that Cell Enriched Cosmetic Surgery helps the anti-aging process and provide longer term results – about five to ten years when compared to other procedures that use synthetic fillers.

Cell Enriched Cosmetic Surgery can be done under local anesthesia. Stay tuned to see what the FDA has to say about this procedure!

Beauty Blog: Non-Invasive Liposuction Using RadioFrequency Device May be Coming Soon!
July 13th, 2010
Posted By Dr. Pope  |  Posted in Cosmetic Procedures, Cosmetic Procedures General, Liposuction | No Comments »

Fat removal surgery also known as Liposuction is quite common and is considered relatively safe. Liposuction is widely practiced and has been around for and innovations over the years have led to the refinement of its procedures and techniques. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) published a study in their March 2010 Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery issue that a new innovation in conducting liposuction may be in the making. According to the ASPS, a noninvasive radio frequency device has shown promise in early research. Electrical energy that is delivered in the form of a high-frequency electrical current is known as radio frequency energy. In liposuction when radio frequency energy is used, fat cells are dissolved using an electrical current which is applied to the fat tissue creating a thermal effect. The procedure involves minimal trauma to the tissue that is being treated.

The pilot study was conducted by researchers from Argentina and California on a small group of patients. They performed liposuction using radiofrequency on 23 patients and found that there was no burning or scarring and patients also experienced less pain after the procedure. The researchers also found improvements in the body contour and significant weight and size reductions in all patients.

The ASPS study concludes that liposuction using radiofrequency may be a good option for removing moderate volumes of fat. That's good news.

However we all know that to safely implement a new procedure, a lot more studies with longer time periods of observation and follow-up of patients will be required to completely understand and validate the benefits of the radiofrequency device.

Not ready for a knife yet? Try some non-surgical procedures to improve the overall appearance of your skin.  Regular peels and facials can help improve the skin tone while reducing blemishes and wrinkles to give you a more youthful appearance. You will save time, money, and will not need any recovery time because they are pain-free.

These facials are designed to tighten the skin through massage and include the usage of  light chemicals to lighten the skin, reduce wrinkles, and remove dead skin and blemishes. The following are three of our most popular facials:
Specialty Facials are facials in which we cleanse, exfoliate and massage the skin around the face  and neck. These facials last about an hour and are designed to meet your needs. Our Micro Peel Plus Facials are specially designed for patients with oily skin or with people who suffer from skin problems like acne and Rosacea. These facials contain a salicylic acid peel which has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.  This peel is great for people who have a lot of skin breakouts because it calms inflammation and cuts through the oils in the skin to reduce skin breakouts.

A Glycolic is recommended for people who have aging and damaged skin. A Glycolic peel helps remove dead skin cells and helps to clean up the skin to remove scarring from acne, fine lines, and wrinkles.

Get ready to reverse the damaging effects of the sun by scheduling a facial today.

Cosmetic Surgery Blog: Considering a Tummy Tuck? Learn the Facts!
June 22nd, 2010
Posted By Dr. Pope  |  Posted in Abdominoplasty, Cosmetic Procedures, Cosmetic Procedures General | 2 Comments »
Tags: ,

A tummy tuck is nothing more than the removal of excess skin and fat. Tummy tucks are popular and commonly done to create a smoother abdominal profile. Tummy tucks are also known as abdominoplasty.

Abdominoplasty requires general anesthesia or sedation through an IV. The doctor will make a horizontal incision between the navel and public hairline. This incision is different for different people and is dependent on the amount of fat removal or skin correction required. The doctor will then repair the weakened abdominal muscles or remove excess skin, tissue and fat as necessary, through the incision. Once the removal is complete, the doctor will suture the area up or use skin adhesives, tapes or clips to close the incision.

If everything goes well, the results are wonderful. Patients find themselves with a flatter and firmer abdomen once the incisions have completely healed. Abdominoplasty can be performed on an outpatient basis and may take a few weeks to completely heal.

As with any surgery, there are many risks with abdominoplasty too. They include:

  • Scarring
  • Bleeding (hematoma)
  • Infection
  • Accumulation of Fluid
  • Numbness, pain, swelling, and nerve damage

Always, always, always retain a board certified doctor when you are considering any cosmetic surgery. And be sure to do your due diligence before undergoing any medical procedure.

All these vascular lesions can be treated with our Cool Glide laser now using a topical anesthetic. There may be multiple treatments needed over a period of a few weeks. Patients are advised to avoid sun tanning and some may need to wear compression stockings temporarily. Contact our office for a consultation today.

Cosmetic Surgery Blog: Brow Lift for a More Youthful Appearance!
June 9th, 2010

Do you get admonished when you frown that you are getting wrinkle lines? Do the signs of aging seem to show up in the form of drooping brows or excessive wrinkling in that area?

A brow lift may help you if:

  • You have creases on your forehead or between your eyes
  • Frown lines between your eyebrows
  • Sagging eyebrows for whatever other reason

Brow lifts are a very common cosmetic procedure which can restore the youthfulness of your face. Brow surgery is many times done in conjunction with an eyelid lift surgery or a face lift.

Brow lifts take about 8-10 days to heal but longer to completely recover. The bruises resulting from the surgery are normally easy to cover up with make-up.

As with any cosmetic procedure, there are risks of scarring, infection, and pain therefore it is important to weigh all your risks and be absolutely certain that this is something you want to do. Going to a board certified physician is imperative to getting your surgery done by a trained and experienced surgeon.
