Cosmetic Surgery Blog: Breast Augmentation Most Popular Surgery in 2009

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery published a study that shows that in 2009 breast augmentation was the most popular cosmetic surgery in the U.S.  After breast surgery, the other procedures that make the top five list are liposuction, eyelid surgery, nose jobs and tummy tucks.

Women get breast augmentation done to improve the size or shape of their breast or in many cases for medical reasons to reconstruct it after illness, accident, or surgery. Depending on the patient, different plastic surgeons will use different techniques to meet the patient’s goals. Each procedure would have to be customized to achieve the result that the patient wants.

An initial consult with a plastic surgeon would result in a discussion around the type of an implant that should be used and where it needs to be placed. Choices can be saline-filled or silicone gel.

Most implants in the United States are either saline solution fillings or using silicone gels. Although silicone gels were banned in the 1990’s, after extensive studies that proved their safety, the ban was lifted in 2006.
So what are the benefits of using silicone gel implants over saline fillings and vice versa?
First, Silicone gel filled breasts feel softer and more natural when compared to saline-filled implant which are firmer. Silicone gel implant surgery is more expensive than saline-filled implants. Saline filled implants can be done through smaller incisions because they are filled after being implanted versus silicone gels which are filled and then implanted.

Breast augmentation can result in enhanced patient confidence and self-esteem. But a through due-diligence with an experienced AND board-certified Plastic Surgeon is the number one thing we recommend if you are considering breast augmentation surgery.

Plastic Surgery Blog: Age Has Nothing to Do With Getting Breast Implants

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reports that last year in the US, breast augmentation surgeries were performed on over 300,000 women in the United States. And many of the women who underwent breast augmentation surgery were over the age of 30. In fact, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reported that in 2009, over 39% of the women who had breast augmentation surgery were between the ages of 35 to 50 years of age and approximately nine percent were older than 50.

And not only are the patients growing older, the breast implants being requested are growing larger too according to industry statistics.

If you are considering breast augmentation surgery, my advise is simple:

Make sure that the doctor you go to IS certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. This is critical for your health and safety. And the second piece of advise is that you should be aware that breast implants are not permanent or just a one-time thing. Most implants come with a 10 year warranty and will need to be replaced as they age or as you age.

If you are considering Breast Implants then you are looking to somehow enhance your appearance. Most times patients want to improve their overall look by getting bigger, more fuller breasts that appear to enhance the total "look" of the person.

How to choose what implants are best for you?

When considering breast implants, it is important to discuss your preferences with your cosmetic surgeon who is best qualified to recommend breast implants which will fit your body type and weight. It is important to balance the overall size of the implants with the overall body composition in order to get the best results. Therefore having reasonable expectations is important because breast implants aren't going to change your basic body type or weight.

Also, you are the only person who is best qualified to make the decision on whether breast implants are the right choice for you or not. As long as you are healthy, not nursing or pregnant, and are simply looking to enhance your appearance, breast implants may be a good choice. But it is your choice and should not be something you give in to because someone else thinks it is the right thing for you to do.

Breast implant surgeries are not without risks and complications and these should be thoroughly discussed with your cosmetic surgeon before making any decisions on proceeding with the surgery. Since education is the first step when making any life-changing decisions, be sure to research all the pros and cons of breast augmentation surgery before visiting a cosmetic surgeon. This will give you an upper hand in discussing the ins-and-outs of the procedure before signing up for it.

Plastic Surgery Blog: Stem Cell Breast Augmentation

So what's Stem Cell Breast Augmentation? It's quite simple; it can be anything you want it to be! And that's why Stem Cell Breast Augmentation may well become a great alternative to silicone breast implants.

In Stem Cell Breast Augmentation what happens is that a surgeon who is performing liposuction on a patient removes the fat and divides it in two equal parts. One half of it is purified and has the stem cells extracted from it. The purified stem cells are then added to the remaining fat that was set aside. The entire mixture is then placed in the breast area where the "augmentation" is required.

So without doing anything unethical, basically this process allows the growth of fat cells in an area where it is needed. By using the patient's own fat and stem cells, the patient actually ends up "growing" her own bigger breasts. And the end result is reduction of fat from where the patient didn't want it and bigger breasts without any foreign object.

No surgery is without risk and so the normal precautions need to be taken.

Sounds quite simple and non-controversial right?

Well, let's see how this plays out as the procedure is still being tested and no one knows whether it is truly safe or if there are any side-effects from using this procedure…..
