Botox is a popular drug made from a toxin which is produced by a bacteria know as Clostridium botulinum. Botox is used in cosmetic procedures to remove wrinkles, crows feet, and forehead lines from the face.

The way Botox injections work is that it weakens or paralyzes certain muscles so that they won't contract. It can also bock certain nerves. This leads to diminishing of your facial wrinkles. The effect of Botox can last for three or four months. There are many side effects from the use of Botox including headache, upset stomach, and flu like symptoms. Botox should not be used during pregnancy or while breast feeding.

The most common signs of aging are wrinkles and wrinkles can be formed through smiling, squinting, and any facial movement that is repeated.

Botox treatments can be combined with procedures such as chemical peels, microdermabrasionelp, and dermal fills which can help further diminsh the effects of aging by the reduction or prevention of new wrinkles and lines on the face.

The Beauty Blog: Oxygen Facials Anyone?

A new beauty treatment! Oxygen Facials……

Neiman Marcus in Boston has collaborated with a Spanish beauty company called Natura Bisse to offer an oxygen facial valued at $1200 but free to customers who spend at least $500 at Neiman Marcus.

Basically a facial room is set up with pure air. First they wash your face and neck with a cleanser and then splash a toner on the clean areas. Once you begin relaxing, customers are given a Glyco peel after which a topical version of Botox is applied to the skin. The final step is massaging a moisturizing serum followed by a mask and another moisturizer.

The entire treatment is supposed to make a remarkable difference in your appearance by immediately reducing your wrinkles and making you feel "fresh", leaving the tiredness behind in the facial room.

Now all you have to do is either buy $500 worth of merchandise at participating Neiman Marcus stores to get it free OR fork out the $1200 to try it out without any pressure of buying stuff you don't need.

Plastic Surgery Blog: Botox Treatments Can Provide Long-Lasting Benefits

Results of a research study unveiled at the meeting of American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeon on April 24 in Washington, D.C show that after two years of Botox treatment, patients can potentially cut the frequency of their Botox treatments into half.

Although the research was sponsored by an unrestricted educational grant from Allergen, Inc., the maker of Botox Cosmetic, the study is worth a second look. If indeed Botox injections have a wrinkle preventing effect, it would mean a huge influx of Botox patients in the upcoming years.

The research study mentioned above included 50 women between the ages of 30 to 50 years of age. These 50 women were given Botox injections every four months for two years. Eventually these women reduced their frequency to once every six months and they still showed reduction in wrinkle formation.

More clinical studies will be required to demonstrate that these results are repeatable. But as I mentioned above, if Botox can indeed create a wrinkle prevention effect, more and more people will begin taking advantage of this treatment in the upcoming years.

Plastic Surgery Blog: The Missing Expression With Botox

Botox injections are non-invasive and therefore are very popular with people. With Botox treatment, people can look younger and freshen up their look. A recent study shows that Botox treatments which eliminate wrinkles can also eliminate the ability to show appropriate emotions on your face.

A study conducted recently showed that people who have taken Botox injections take longer to show emotions like sadness, glaring, or showing sympathy. The slowness of displaying those emotional reactions may lead to lost friendships if people misinterpret the reason for the lack of sympathy or lack of sadness on someone's face.

So Botox may be good for removing wrinkles but make sure that you are aware of its ability to also impact your social life too when people fail to understand why you appear "unsympathetic" in a particularly sad situation.

Seeing wrinkles and laugh lines that make you think about Botox and plastic surgery? But Plastic Surgery may not be the only answer to improving your appearance.

Here are some treatments which can bring about a youthful appearance in patients at a fraction of the cost of plastic surgery:

  • Sculptra: This is an injection which allows you to rebuild collagen in your facial tissues. When used, it creates a fresher, more plumped up appearance and has a longer lasting effect than Botox. It costs approximately $1000 per vial but may be worth every penny.

  • Dysport: This is another injection but it is closer to Botox and has similar chemicals. Dysport injections paralyze the wrinkle-causing muscles leaving patients looking younger and energized. Dysport results may last for almost three to four months,a gain similar to Botox.

  • Broadband light treatment: This treatment is mostly used to remove freckles, brown spots, and other skin imperfections. You may end up requiring many sessions at approximately $300-$400 per session but it is one of the more non-invasive procedures available.

Remember to always consult with a licensed practitioner before deciding upon any of the above procedures. And also remember that this blog doesn't constitute "medical" advise but is only meant to share insight and information at a general/high-level.

Plastic Surgery Blog: A down-turned economy means fewer Botox and Tummy Tucks too!

Well, it's not surprise for any of us. A down-turned economy means fewer dollars spent on "want" items, and now the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery confirms that logical conclusion. A study shows that in 2009, cosmetic procedures performed in the USA were down by 2 percent when compared to 2008 however Americans still spent almost $10.5 billion for cosmetic procedures in 2009.

However Dr. Renato Saltz, president of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery feels that will change as soon as the recession lifts and people once again think about using surgical procedures to "look good".

According to the published report, more than 50% of the people who underwent cosmetic treatment in 2009  were men and women between the ages of 30 to 50. And what was the most popular surgical procedure? Breast Augmentation followed by liposuction, eyelid surgery, abdominoplasty, and facelifts.

Non-surgical procedures like Botox and Dysport treatments were popular too along with laser hair removal treatments, microdermabrasion treatments, and chemical peels.
