Plastic Surgeon Blog: Cell Enriched Cosmetic Surgery
July 28th, 2010

Cell Enriched Cosmetic Surgery as the name suggests is procedure in which fat cells containing stem cells are transferred to other areas of the body. This is an experimental procedure recently performed on a patient in Plano, Texas to help reverse aging and muscle tissue deterioration.

The entire process of Cell Enriched Cosmetic Surgery involves removing fat cells from various parts of the body. These fat cells are then treated to multiply the amount of stem cells present. These fat cells containing stem cells are then transferred to the parts of the body where more volume is required.

Cell Enriched Cosmetic Surgery is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration yet but is expected to get approved in a few months.

Since stem cells promote better tissue regeneration, the doctor who performed the experimental surgery states that Cell Enriched Cosmetic Surgery helps the anti-aging process and provide longer term results – about five to ten years when compared to other procedures that use synthetic fillers.

Cell Enriched Cosmetic Surgery can be done under local anesthesia. Stay tuned to see what the FDA has to say about this procedure!

Plastic Surgeon Blog: Minimally Invasive Cosmetic Procedures
July 19th, 2010

Minimally invasive cosmetic procedures means that instead of going under the knife like in the olden days, you'll be treated with non-ablative lasers, light-based therapies, radio frequency, acoustic waves, and sometimes also procedures done with a local anesthetic.

One such procedure that can be performed non-surgically is Rhinoplasty.

You know what a rhinoplasty is right? Yes, it's most commonly known as a nose job. A non-surgical rhinoplasty cannot reduce the size of a large nose. It simply involves re-contouring to remove irregularities and reshaping to make the nose appear smaller on the face. And if patients are not satisfied with the the non-surgical nose job, they can do another revision instead of going through a surgical rhinoplasty.

Non-surgical rhinoplasty is the perfect option when you:

  • may have a bump of tissue around the nose and just want to reduce it's appearance
  • wish to remove or reduce dents, grooves, depressions on your nose
  • wish to improve symmetry or shape
  • want to lift a drooping nasal tip
  • want to reshape to a sharp tip or round shaped nose

To achieve a symmetrical look and a smoother shape, your physician may inject small amounts of dermal filler (such as Radiesse, Silicone, etc) where the areas need to be filled out.

Non-surgical rhinoplasty is not for everyone. Non-surgical rhinoplasty is also not for people in a hurry to get a better looking nose. Non-surgical rhinoplasty may take up to six or eight weeks because it may require multiple sessions of micro-filling of dermal filler to create the shape you desire.

Contact us to schedule a no-obligation consultation if you are seriously interested in getting a Non-surgical rhinoplasty done!

Plastic Surgeon Blog: Thinking of Plastic Surgery? You’re Not Alone!

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) published that in 2009, 12.5 million cosmetic plastic surgery procedures were performed in the United States. That number, although quite impressive, was actually one percent lower than the number of surgeries performed in 2008. Economic reasons were cited as the reason for lower numbers in 2009 however the outlook is positive for the future according to the ASPS president Michael McGuire.

Minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures were extremely popular in 2009 and they showed an increase when compared to 2008. The ASPS reports that the top five minimally-invasive procedures in 2009 were:

    * 48 million Botulinum toxin type A
    * 1.7 million Soft tissue fillers
    * 1.1 million Chemical peels
    * 910,000 Microdermabrasion treatments
    * 893,000 Laser hair removal procedures

In contrast cosmetic surgical procedures showed a decline by about nine percent. The top five surgical procedures in 2009 were:

    * 289,000 Breast augmentations
    * 256,000 Nose reshapings
    * 203,000 Eyelid surgeries
    * 198,000 Liposuctions
    * 115,000 Tummy tucks

I guess this makes sense. As more and more innovative, non-invasive procedures become available, less and less people will be inclined to go under the knife.

The exception to the above would be plastic surgery that would be done for reconstruction purposes, whereby an abnormal structure is improved in appearance or function. ASPS reported that reconstructive plastic surgery went up by 5% in 2009 and the top five reconstructive procedures in 2009 were:

    * 3.9 million Tumor removals
    * 332,000 Laceration repairs
    * 171,000 Scar revision
    * 110,000 Hand surgeries
    * 90,000 Maxillofacial surgeries

So if you are considering plastic surgery, you aren't alone by any means. This data shows that more and more people embrace plastic surgery as a more readily available choice to improve or enhance looks and body contours. Beauty Blog: Non-Invasive Liposuction Using RadioFrequency Device May be Coming Soon!
July 13th, 2010

Fat removal surgery also known as Liposuction is quite common and is considered relatively safe. Liposuction is widely practiced and has been around for and innovations over the years have led to the refinement of its procedures and techniques. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) published a study in their March 2010 Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery issue that a new innovation in conducting liposuction may be in the making. According to the ASPS, a noninvasive radio frequency device has shown promise in early research. Electrical energy that is delivered in the form of a high-frequency electrical current is known as radio frequency energy. In liposuction when radio frequency energy is used, fat cells are dissolved using an electrical current which is applied to the fat tissue creating a thermal effect. The procedure involves minimal trauma to the tissue that is being treated.

The pilot study was conducted by researchers from Argentina and California on a small group of patients. They performed liposuction using radiofrequency on 23 patients and found that there was no burning or scarring and patients also experienced less pain after the procedure. The researchers also found improvements in the body contour and significant weight and size reductions in all patients.

The ASPS study concludes that liposuction using radiofrequency may be a good option for removing moderate volumes of fat. That's good news.

However we all know that to safely implement a new procedure, a lot more studies with longer time periods of observation and follow-up of patients will be required to completely understand and validate the benefits of the radiofrequency device.

Cosmetic Surgery Blog: Face Lift Basics

A face lift is a cosmetic procedure done to reduce the signs of aging in the face and neck. A facelift is also known as Rhytidectomy. A face lift corrects problems such as:

  • Sagging in the face
  • Deep lines or creases below the eyelids or along the nose and mouth
  • Loss of muscle or loose skin
  • Excessive fat around the chin or jaw (double chins)

A face lift can only be performed surgically. People can choose from traditional facelift, a facelift with limited incisions or a neck lift.

In a traditional facelift, the incision is generally made at the hairline, around the ear, and at the base of the scalp. The fat is then either removed or redistributed around the face and neck. The skin is draped over the face, chin and neck and excess skin is trimmed off. The incisions are closed off with sutures or skin adhesives.

You must consult a board certified physician to determine if a face lift is for you. Contact us today for a no-obligation consultation to determine if a face lift is for you.

Cosmetic Surgery Blog: Liposuction versus Tummy Tuck
July 1st, 2010

Wonder whether liposuction is better or whether you are better candidate for a tummy tuck? Of course a consultation with a skilled and board certified cosmetic surgeon.

A tummy tuck is also known as abnominoplasty.  Abnominoplasty is more appropriate when there is a lot of fat in the abdomen along with excessive skin and muscle sagging. However if the issue is excessive abdominal fat, then liposuction may be more appropriate.

Liposuction removes fat deposits but the sagging skin is not trimmed away so if there was any sagging skin or muscle before liposuction, it would still remain. However a tummy tuck would remove not just the fat but also the skin and sagging muscle. Also any weakened abdominal muscles would be removed which would result in a tight abdomen.

Liposuction recovery is generally faster than recovery after a tummy tuck. Liposuction also requires small incisions and will result in minimal scars. Liposuction is perfect for someone who has a need to trim an already pretty good figure. Liposuction can be also be done on the hips, thighs, and arms. Liposuction can be combined with  abdominoplasty to achieve best results for removal of fat and for tightening loose skin.

I’m hoping this clarifies some of the major differences of liposuction and abdominoplasty and helps you choose the best solution for your body. Check out all our services and call our office for an appointment today.

Not ready for a knife yet? Try some non-surgical procedures to improve the overall appearance of your skin.  Regular peels and facials can help improve the skin tone while reducing blemishes and wrinkles to give you a more youthful appearance. You will save time, money, and will not need any recovery time because they are pain-free.

These facials are designed to tighten the skin through massage and include the usage of  light chemicals to lighten the skin, reduce wrinkles, and remove dead skin and blemishes. The following are three of our most popular facials:
Specialty Facials are facials in which we cleanse, exfoliate and massage the skin around the face  and neck. These facials last about an hour and are designed to meet your needs. Our Micro Peel Plus Facials are specially designed for patients with oily skin or with people who suffer from skin problems like acne and Rosacea. These facials contain a salicylic acid peel which has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.  This peel is great for people who have a lot of skin breakouts because it calms inflammation and cuts through the oils in the skin to reduce skin breakouts.

A Glycolic is recommended for people who have aging and damaged skin. A Glycolic peel helps remove dead skin cells and helps to clean up the skin to remove scarring from acne, fine lines, and wrinkles.

Cosmetic Surgery Blog: Dimpleplasty anyone?
June 24th, 2010

Looking for Shirley Temple cheeks? Well, here's a new procedure that'll make your dimples stand out; pun intended! Yep, Dimpleplasty is the latest craze in the plastic surgery/cosmetic surgery world.

Man-made dimples are now possible through dimpleplasty. the Dimpleplasty procedure entails the creation of a small incision in the skin to make a depression. The underside of the skin is then pinned to a deeper layer and voila, you have a dimple in the scar tissue that is left behind after the incision heals and the sutures dissolve is

And with dimpleplasty, whether you are smiling or not, your dimples will always be visible.

Interesting eh? Welcome to Dimpleplasty; the newest, easiest way to get dimples if you weren't blessed by them at birth.

Cosmetic Surgery Blog: Considering a Tummy Tuck? Learn the Facts!
June 22nd, 2010
Posted By Dr. Pope  |  Posted in Abdominoplasty, Cosmetic Procedures, Cosmetic Procedures General | 2 Comments »

A tummy tuck is nothing more than the removal of excess skin and fat. Tummy tucks are popular and commonly done to create a smoother abdominal profile. Tummy tucks are also known as abdominoplasty.

Abdominoplasty requires general anesthesia or sedation through an IV. The doctor will make a horizontal incision between the navel and public hairline. This incision is different for different people and is dependent on the amount of fat removal or skin correction required. The doctor will then repair the weakened abdominal muscles or remove excess skin, tissue and fat as necessary, through the incision. Once the removal is complete, the doctor will suture the area up or use skin adhesives, tapes or clips to close the incision.

If everything goes well, the results are wonderful. Patients find themselves with a flatter and firmer abdomen once the incisions have completely healed. Abdominoplasty can be performed on an outpatient basis and may take a few weeks to completely heal.

As with any surgery, there are many risks with abdominoplasty too. They include:

  • Scarring
  • Bleeding (hematoma)
  • Infection
  • Accumulation of Fluid
  • Numbness, pain, swelling, and nerve damage

Always, always, always retain a board certified doctor when you are considering any cosmetic surgery. And be sure to do your due diligence before undergoing any medical procedure.
